Artificial Muscle

The research, parts of which are already being used in Japan to generate electricity from ocean waves, could be used to make walking robots, develop better prosthetics, or even charge your iPod."We've made an artificial muscle that, when you apply electricity to it, it expands" more than 200 percent, said Qibing Pei, a scientist at the University of California, Los Angeles and study author. "The motion and energy is a lot like human muscles."Artificial muscles have been around for years but have essentially hamstrung themselves. Some artificial muscles get so big they tear, developing uneven film thickness and random particles that cause muscle failure. The researchers used flexible, ever-more ubiquitous carbon nanotubes as electrodes instead of other films, often metal-based, that fail after repeated use.If an area of the carbon nanotube fails, the region around it seals itself by becoming non-conductive and prevents the fault from spreading to other areas.

Message Therapy

Massage is the manipulation of muscles and tendons, ligaments, and other connective tissue by applying pressure to the body. The scientists do not know why exactly message therapy works for so many people. However, there is evidence of phyisical, physiological, and pyschological reasons for its success.

Most people use message to relax and loosen stiff, sore muscles. Since message stretches and relaxes the muscles, the joints become easier to move and the range of motion is increased. Message therepy may promote the recovery from fatigue and reduced minor pains. It stimulates the glands of the skin. skin glands keep the skin cool and moisturized. Message may also help boost immune system.

Using Protein to Strengthen Muscles

A team of researchers from the University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences led by Amy Fernando, through its study has examined the effects of increasing protein intake by essential amino acid supplementation in the elderly subjected to 10 day bed rest on lean body mass and muscle function. For the study, a total of 22 subjects were recruited, and of the total, 12 were assigned to receive a placebo and 10 subjects were assigned to receive essential amino acid supplements. The subjects of the control group (n=12) were advised to take in a placebo three times a day. Similarly the participants of the amino acids group were advised to consume 15 grams of essential amino acid three times a day. The participants of both groups were advised to continue with the supplements for a period of 10 days of bed rest. The lean body mass, muscle protein synthesis, and muscle function were measured and recorded both before and after bed rest.

The results of the study show that there is a potential for the preservation of functional outcomes with essential amino acid supplementation. The researchers conclude that increasing protein intake above the recommended dietary allowance may help preserve muscle function in the geriatric population during the period of inactivity. Therefore, essential amino acid supplementation is a potentially efficient method of increasing protein intake without affecting the satiety.

Treatment for Muscular Dystrophy

There is no cure for any form of muscular dystrophy (MD) but medications and therapy can slow the course of the disease. Human trials of gene therapy with the dystrophin gene are on the near horizon. For instance, scientists are researching ways to insert a working dystrophin gene into the muscles of boys with Duchenne and Becker muscular dystrophies.

Researchers are investigating the potential of certain muscle-building medicines to slow down or reverse the progression of muscular dystrophy. Other trials are looking into the effects of the dietary supplements creatine and glutamine on muscle energy production and storage.

Dantrium Capsules

Dantrium capsules contain the active ingredient dantrolene sodium, which is a muscle relaxant.
It is not yet completely understood how dantrolene works. It is thought to interfere with the nerve signals that the muscles receive, making the muscles less sensitive to the nerve signals. As a result, the muscles can relax and spasticity is reduced. Dantrolene sodium is used as a muscle relaxant in conditions where there is long-term muscle stiffness in adults
It is used for Long-term muscle spasticity in adults.
